Making Sure ‘Busy’ Doesn’t Lead to Burnout

Too busy? Of course you are.

Driven in part by the sluggish recovery and reduced layers of management, many executives face growing workloads that require longer hours and greater effort. As they try to execute their plans, they must also confront dozens of daily emergencies that constantly pop up via email, phone, text messages and meetings both in-person and virtual.

How can you tame all-consuming work demands without burning out?

For Google GOOG +1.63% Inc. executive Marissa Mayer, it’s arranging a weeklong break every few months to relieve the pressure of her usual 90-hour weeks—though work sometimes upsets her plans. For other high-ranking managers, it’s finding ways to manage their time so that they both progress on long-term goals and address burning issues.

Top managers with “too much to do and not enough time to do it,” frequently neglect their most critical duty—improving the business, says Steve McClatchy, president of Alleer Training & Consulting in Malvern, Pa. A decade ago, he used to conduct 25 time-management workshops per year. He now conducts about 150.

Countless leadership coaches, books, software and websites offer various coping strategies to overwhelmed executives. For starters, decide what’s most important to you—through a rigorous self assessment or by compiling a list of your regular daily tasks, experts say.

Even bosses with well-defined goals can “ultimately let other people’s objectives overpower their own,” says Rory Vaden, author of career-advice book “Take the Stairs,” and co-founder of Southwestern Consulting. The Nashville, Tenn., firm has coached more than 800 people about time management since 2008.
